Alexander Horn, a magician that not only wants us to know the history of magic but the deep dark secrets it holds.
"When you think of magicians, it's mustaches, rabbit but it's not that." He says, ”Magic has always been done to entertain and screw people over" includes in his lecture of Maidens, Minstrels, and Magic: A history of magic, sexism, and racism therein.
Cody explains many different magic tricks and magicians that show racism and how minorities are not known for magic.
"Why do the bugs have to be racist?" he says, explaining how in a childhood movie “Bug’s Life” shows racism. “That one bug was wearing a kimono and coming out of a Chinese takeout box.”
While showing us the history of many different magicians being racist, he goes into detail of many minority magicians we probably have never heard about.
"I give anyone $50 for anyone that knows an African American or a Female magician at the top of your head" No one in the room raised their hand. “This is why I’m here.”
"Behold as I transform this normal woman into a sexual prop," he says pretending to mock a magician using a woman for a magic trick.
He talks about the history of women in magic and how they were shunned for being magicians. Men especially didn’t recognize them as “real magicians.”
He also says that magic back then was a “macho thing,” and many people didn’t recognize women for it. Instead, men used them as objects for their magic tricks.
Before he ends the presentation he says, “it's fine to see your favorite magician, but give women or minorities a shot.”
